The New Suspension Bridge at Caminito del Rey: A Chance to Boost Tourism and the Local Economy
The Caminito del Rey, one of Málaga’s most iconic tourist attractions, is preparing to extend its route with the addition of a new 110-meter-long pedestrian suspension bridge, which will become the longest of its kind in Spain. This initiative, recently announced by the Málaga Provincial Council, aims not only to enrich the visitor experience but also to boost tourism and the local economy.
Project Details
The new bridge will be located at the final stretch of the current Caminito del Rey route, just before the railway’s iron bridge and the El Chorro tunnel, at an approximate height of 50 meters. The structure, designed to offer unmatched panoramic views of the Gaitanes Gorge, will feature two main steel cables weighing 4,500 kilograms each, supporting a wooden walkway on a metal base. Due to the heavy materials, installation will require the use of helicopters. Construction is expected to begin at the end of March, with an estimated investment of €1.25 million. The inauguration is scheduled for November 2025, coinciding with the 120th anniversary of the Caminito and the 10th anniversary of its reopening as a tourist route.
